Duke Stores Sustainability

At Duke Stores, we strive to minimize our impact on the environment by reducing our use of energy and natural resources. Here are some examples of efforts taking place within our organization:

  • Blue Devil Concessions uses recyclable napkins and some recyclable trays.
  • In November of 2007, during the worst drought ever recorded in Durham County, Duke Stores took the lead and contacted ASI Laundry Service to assist in the water conservation effort. 189 washers were replaced with Speed Queen High-Efficiency, front load washers. This move reduced water usage by over 50% (over 2.9 million gallons per year) and saved energy costs by approximately $75,000 per year.
  • The Textbook Store's Buyback Program buys back textbooks for resale thereby reducing the production and purchase of new textbooks. More than 51,000 books have been bought back in the last four buyback sessions. Books that cannot be bought back are donated to Better World Books that, in turn, helps fund literacy projects around the world. This program has diverted more than 13,000 tons of books from landfills.
  • Sell "green" office and school supplies.
  • Customers receive a 25 cent credit on their purchase if they are using one of Duke's Green Initiative cloth bags.
  • Save and reuse cardboard boxes and packing materials for outgoing shipments to customers and returns to publishers. Cardboard that is unable to be reused is recycled.
  • Return used ink and toner cartridges and defective printer and computer parts for remanufacture. All printer and computer parts that cannot be remanufactured are sent to Duke Procurement for recycling.
  • Buy and sell remanufactured toner cartridges and printer and computer parts.
  • All printers and computers that still have some use are sent to Duke Procurement for distribution to local schools and charities.
  • In Computer Repair, testing paper is used multiple times and then recycled.
  • Employees make every effort to minimize the use of paper by handling as much business as possible using email, internet, and computer files to avoid printing documents on paper. When possible, vendors are asked to send website addresses to online catalogs rather than mailing printed catalogs.
  • Ask customers if they want a bag, rather than just giving one to everyone.
  • Where possible, regular light bulbs have been replaced with fluorescent energy efficient bulbs. In our stores and offices, we use as few lights as possible during the day. All lights are turned off at the end of the day.
  • Recycle all the paper, unsold magazines, catalogs, books, mail, and newspapers. In Computer Repair, plastic bags are recycled through the local Kroger grocery store.
  • Recycle all drink containers, both plastic and glass.
  • The Terrace Shop collects rainwater and uses it to water plants.
  • Duke Stores conforms to a "Green Purchasing" policy:
"Duke Stores will give preference to environmentally friendly products, where quality, function and cost are equal or superior to more traditional products. Products and packaging materials will contain a prescribed minimum post-consumer recycled content and will be minimized and/or substituted with more environmentally appropriate alternatives whenever possible. All products will be chosen based on efficient use of energy, natural resources, and potential for safe, non-hazardous disposal."
